Baby Growth Milestones: A Month-by-Month Guide with Weight Gain Targets

Parents often take to the internet to figure out the major growth milestones for their babies into toddlerhood, but they are met with varying opinions and vastly different milestones. Even when turning to familiar sources like WHO, CDC, or AAP, none provide public month-by-month milestones for families. This often leads to confusion about when certain milestones should be achieved, and there is a wider possibility of delayed assistance for infants needing additional support.

I made the following graphic to aid in every family’s journey with their little one with minimum weight gain goals. The goals listed may conflict with your child’s pediatrician for many reasons, but what is listed are the straightforward basics needed to ensure your little one gets what they need to avoid potential complications. If your baby isn’t gaining as expected, contact an IBCLC for help with feeding goals. If your baby isn’t meeting their motor skill milestones, contact a pediatric Physical Therapist or Occupational Therapist. If your baby is struggling with solids or oral vocal skills, please reach out to a pediatric SLP. Remember that early intervention typically results in improvement with faster resolution results. Check in your area for pediatric providers that also offer wellness checks; these critical services can prevent issues before they even become a concern!
